Sunset Cantina

by Margaret and John Fleming

When Pam and Dave Rowland opened Sunset Cantina, their goal, Dave told us, was to have the best margaritas and the coldest beer in town. He serves his beer in thoroughly chilled, but not frozen, glasses, and it is COLD. The margaritas are delicious too.

One of Sunset Cantina's best features is its location. Situated on the second floor of a new building across from Plaza las Glorias, the bar has a 180· view from picture windows on three sides of the room. On the lower floor Dave and Pam will soon have a restaurant serving hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries, and onion rings; the third floor, a roof deck, provides additional seating space and an even more dramatic view of the ocean.

The Rowlands are from Mesa, Arizona, where they lived for 14 years. They opened Sunset Cantina 6 weeks ago. It's a family enterprise. Dave and Pam are on duty during the day, and their two sons, Chad, 22, and Brad, 21, manage it at night. It's open from 10 a.m. (or whenever the first visitor arrives) until 3 a.m.

The Cantina has a Happy Hour every day from 5 to 7. It shows NFL, NBA, and all major sports programs. Music consists of the best from the 60's through the 90's, and dancers will be happy to know that there's a dance floor. The decor is Mexican: elegant ceramic tile on the floor, lacy colored doilies hanging from the ceiling, and a carved and painted wooden panorama across the front of the bar. The place is clean, light, spacious, and beautiful.

Pam and Dave offer old-fashioned hospitality to all temporary and permanent residents of the city. Their aim is to provide quality products with exceptional service. In addition, they want to become an information center for out-of-town customers. They have done quite a bit of research about Puerto Peñasco and can answer many questions that visitors typically ask.

What they love about Puerto Peñasco, Dave said, is that it still has the kind of social climate that the U.S. had in the 50's--neighborliness, friendliness, a sense of community. They feel that this has been, to a great extent, lost in the United States. Finding it here has been for them a beautiful and rewarding experience.

La Marina, the new plaza where Sunset Cantina is located, is a business condo development. An international restaurant, Rocky's and Point's, is open already, serving Mexican, Italian, Chinese, and American cuisine. Another shop sells Broasted Chicken to take out or eat there. We had some and found it delicious. Other businesses opening soon will be a pizza parlor, a game room, a pottery shop, a liquor store, a pharmacy, an insurance company, a scuba diving center, and a flower shop.
