Farmacia Zygle has been a customer of El Futuro almost since the beginning
three years ago. We learned a little history of it recently when we were there.
It's an enterprise of the Zarrabal family; we met the father, Donaciano Zarrabal
Melche, who operates an ice cream and snack shop, Neveria Zygle, in the mini-plaza
next to the pharmacy. He has three daughters: Yolanda, Glenda, and Leticia,
and a son, Ernesto. The pharmacy gets its name from theirs:
Zarrabal
Yolanda
Glenda
Leticia
Ernesto
Yolanda owns and manages the pharmacy. Glenda is a chemist, and Leticia is a psychologist. Glenda has an office and laboratory in the plaza. It was closed the evening we were there, so we didn't meet her. The pharmacy was open, but Yolanda wasn't available. We did, however, have a chance to talk to Silvia Torres who works there. We asked her if she was related to Romeo Torres, the El Futuro Office Manager. She said no, but she had been at school with him. She was very helpful, showing us around and answering as many of our questions as she could.
The pharmacy is spacious; items are displayed attractively and conveniently. In addition to the usual cosmetics and non-prescription items, the front room has a selection of sunglasses, hats, sweaters, stockings, and purses. The prescription section is in a room behind the counter. Sr. Zarrabal told us that the business had started with a small office in 1969 and expanded gradually. In 1989 it was remodeled and expanded, and in 1992 the plaza was added.
The plaza is very attractive. It's paved with brick, and a center section with benches and tables shaded by a ramada divides the pharmacy from the shops. In addition to the ice cream shop there is Lupita's, an excellent place to buy sheets, towels, bedspreads, and other white goods. Next door is a lingerie shop, and beyond that an office where 5 doctors practice medicine of the ear, nose, and throat. Across the rest of the back is Glenda's chemical laboratory. Small plazas like this give the city character and often provide surprising finds for enterprising shoppers.
