Mercado del Desierto

by Margaret Fleming

We always find people with interesting stories when we interview business owners. Our latest such interview was with Armando Duarte Sanchez, owner of Mercado del Desierto, a large grocery store on the Cholla Bay Road. Originally from Mexico City, he has lived in Puerto Peñasco for 10 years and operated this store for the last 7. He is married and has 3 children.

Armando's parents owned a store, and he worked in it when he was young. Now they too live here in Puerto Peñasco, where they own and operate La Doña Antojitos Mexicanos diagonally across the road from Armando. One of his brothers owns La Bellota Supermercado on Ave. Constitución; another brother owns Mercado de la Pacifica, and a sister owns Abarrotes Blanca. Retailing must be in the genes in this family.

Americans often ask me if there are grocery stores in Puerto Peñasco because they don't see them when they go straight to the beach. Of course there are, and this one is a good example. It has a good selection of canned and dry goods, a large butcher shop, and a produce section. I bought a number of items--some jars of molé sauce, canned chilis, and other Mexican foods. Americans will also find all the staples they are used to. The store is especially convenient for vacationers on their way to Cholla Bay. Look for it on the right a few blocks after turning off the main highway.
