Last time we were in Puerto Penasco we noticed that one of the slats of our
blinds was broken and needed to be replaced. Several others that had been broken
earlier and we had patched up really needed to be replaced also. So we decided
to get some from one of our advertisers, Sanchez Alfombras y Persianas (carpets
and blinds).
When we first entered the shop, located on Juan de la Barrera, we were struck with how attractive it was. Different styles of blinds hung on the walls and books of carpet samples sat on low tabled all, tastefully arranged so that the effect was one of harmony, not of overcrowding. We felt at home right away. An attractive young woman asked if she could help us. We learned that her name was Merith Sanchez, the daughter of the owners. Apparently our request was a little out of the ordinary because she called her father and he came over right away.
Guadalupe Sanchez took care of us efficiently, and then we had time to talk with him a little. He is a very genial man, one with the right personality to be in business. He has been in Puerto Peñasco since 1961 and in this particular business for 7 years. Before moving to his present shop, where he has been 2 years, he had a location on Blvd. Fremont. Like so many in Puerto Peñasco, this is a family business. His wife, Maria GuadalupeVasquez also works in the shop, and she too was most congenial and attractive. Besides Merith, the couple have two other children, Gypsia Guadalupe and Noe Atahuaipa.
Sanchez stocks all kinds of carpet and tile, almost all of it imported from the U.S.--Some items are Congoleum, stick-on tile, and wood-grained tiles that simulate wood. We expressed surprise that there is a market for carpet here, since we were under the impression that most people prefer tile. Sr. Sanchez said no, that many people, especially Mexicans, use carpet. Probably the reason so many Americans like tile is that it is less expensive here than in the U.S. and they think of it as a luxury item. Also those houses on the beach want a floor covering that will be easy to clean up after sand is tracked in. But in town, away from the beach, carpet is very popular. Sanchez also makes tracks to order and installs blinds, usually within 24 hours.
Guadalupe Sanchez says that he specializes only in carpet and blinds because there are plenty of others who sell tile. His policy is to focus on a small area and do that exceptionally well.
We can testify from personal experience that his service is exceptional. We needed a number of slats for different sized windows, as well as repair of one of the frames. We left our order at the shop at about 12:20, and by 2:00 we picked up our repaired frame and all our replacement slats. It's always a pleasure to do business with a shop that's both welcoming and efficient.
