Keno's is a new store on Calle 13 near Plaza Las Glorias. It's a combination convenience store and fast food restaurant; and in a couple more months it will have a full restaurant on the second floor. The building was designed by Job Ramses Camacho, whom we interviewed a month ago (see article on page). At that time, he showed us this building as an example of his work. He did a good job; the building is very attractive and functional, with several original touches.
We stopped at Keno's for lunch one day. The fast food counter is outside on a terrace, and we could see behind it gleaming white tiles and spotless stainless steel fixtures. We ordered, and the server behind the counter suggested that we take our drinks inside since it was a bit chilly and windy. We did and sat down at one of several tables there.
The inside decor is very pleasing, with light green tiles on the floor, and cabinets painted in what I'd call apple green. The store is well-equipped and spacious. A counter divides off a corner of the room where a pharmacy is going to be
Our lunches were brought in to us as soon as they were ready. While we were waiting, we talked to Mavy Soto, who is the owner, along with her husband Francisco Eugenio. We also met the administrator, Ramses Romo, the chef, Eduardo Aguirre, and clerks Idaly Lopez and Mavy Mendez. Ramses and some of his assistants were busy stacking up bottles of liquor behind the counter. This store has gone up and taken shape fast. Every time we go there something new has been added. Next time it will probably be the pharmacy.
The lunches were delicious. Eduardo is obviously doing a great job. I had fish tacos, a specialty of the house, and John had quesadillas. It was just what we needed for something quick and tasty.
The convenience store has everything you would expect, including a section for auto maintenance with oil, brake fluid, flashlights, flat fix, and tools. The store is open from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to midnight Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. So if you need a quick lunch or a six-pack of beer, or an aspirin, or a flashlight battery, or a loaf of bread any time, even late at night, here's the place to go.
