Everything for Fishing
by Margaret Fleming
Redes
y Equipos Marinos de Peņasco is a new business situated in Plaza Kino. It's
been open less than 6 months. The owners are Rafael Hernandez Hernandez and
his wife Patricia (Patty) Quintana de Hernandez. They have a charming 8-year
old daughter nameed Natziely. Patty told me it is an Aztec name.
The
shop has all kinds of equipment for boats and fishing. Along the walls coils
of yellow nylon rope are piled up with blue fishnets, tarps, gloves, weights,
and fishing tackle. Rubber fishing boots are lined up on a shelf above the counter
along with an assortment of life jackets. Glass cabinets hold knives, wrenches,
and other tools. A row of large shovels attached to one wall intrigued me, and
I asked what they were used for. Rafael told me they were to shovel ice onto
the shrimp. It's hard to think of anything used for fishing that isn't here.
Rafael
also sells boats. He showed us a picture of a 23' fiberglass panga, his first
sale. The boats are made in Los Mochis, Sinaloa. Rafael can take an order and
have delivery of the boat in 15 days. And he sells a range of engines with recognizable
(even by me) names such as Johnson, Yamaha, and Evinrude. They can be ordered
and delivered in just a few days.
Rafael
and Patty are both from Puerto Peņasco. Rafael used to work for his father,
who had a welding shop and boat workshop. There he became skilled at repair
and maintenance of boats. Patty's father has been a fisherman for years, #1
for jumbo blue shrimp in Guaymas, San Felipe, and Puerto Peņasco.
Redes
y Equipos Marinos has it all: equipment, a good location, contacts--both business
and personal, experience in the industry, and good personalities in its owners.
