Small Business Success

by Margaret Fleming

We were driving around in one of our periodic tours of Puerto Peñasco just to see what we could find of interest. As we drove along the new Cholla Bay Road (that's the one north of the old road, with a row of electric power poles along it), we could see that sewer lines were also going in. When all the utilities are in place, this will be an excellent spot for any business. We noticed a building on the left in the process of construction. Sitting in the front window opening were 4 or 5 people, who looked like a family, eating their lunch. We decided to stop and talk to them.

As we approached, we could see that they were eating oysters, seasoning them with salsa and lime juice before taking them out of the shells and popping them into their mouths. It looked good.

We found out that this was a family--José Martin Pasos, his wife Maria Penado, and their young children Lilian and José Martin. They have had a small shop in their home, but now they are expanding it. The new building is at least twice the size of the old one, so they will be able to have more merchandise. They sell groceries, canned goods, fresh meat, vegetables, soft drinks, and other such staples.

Maria took me in and showed me the old shop and told me a little about it. I learned that the new building has been under construction for about 3 months already and should be complete in another 2 months. The name of the shop is Abarrotes San Rafael (or Don Rafael).

We love to see this sort of success. Here is a family who started a business on a very small scale, and has done well enough to expand its operations to double the original size. And the owners recognize that there will be lots more traffic in the future, so they are thinking ahead. What a perfect example of free enterprise at work.
