Indian Tile is a new business located on the Cholla Bay Road. Owned by brothers Pablo and Rodrigo Elizondo, it has been open about a month. We talked with them and with Gilberto Lopez, the manager. Gilberto and an assistant, Judith Guerrero, showed us all around the store and pointed out the various products available. Gilberto is from Caborca and, until recently, has been in Puerto Peñasco only for brief vacations. Judith has lived in the U.S. and speaks English. They were both very gracious and went out of their way to search for special items to show us.
Indian Tile carries all kinds of tile, but specializes in original hand painted Talavera tile. We saw some samples that were really impressive. My favorites were the foods. Colorful and decorative radishes, tomatoes, carrots, lettuce, lemons, strawberries, and watermelon, were all represented on tiles. Others had floral and abstract designs of many different kinds, and there were of course plain colored ones as well.
The shop also displays several beautiful murals made from tile. There are religious subjects, people, plants, and animals. I especially liked one with a center panel of bright-colored parrots.
Other, less dramatic but certainly useful, products carried by Indian tile include washbasins, toilets, plumbing fixtures, electrical outlet covers, cabinets, and doors. These come in a wide variety of colors and styles. One toilet had a scalloped outer edge and a scalloped tank cover--I thought it was very glamorous; I'd never seen one like it before.
