Have you ever been in Puerto Peñasco for a weekend and realized that you forgot to bring a change of clothes? Or had a child spill soda on her last pair of shorts? Or had someone get sick and throw up all over the sheets? If you're like many Americans, you don't know where to go for help.
But cheer up, there are laundromats in town. The Mexican word is lavamatica. One that we know of is owned by our friend Gerardo Portugal. It's on Avenida Constitución, across the street from Hotel Paraiso del Desierto. The Lavamatica is a large operation with 23 washers and 13 dryers.
We talked to the manager, a beautiful and vivacious young woman named Lourdes Espino, known as Lulu. She's been working there for a year and a half and seems very capable. She told us that for 25 pesos, or $3.50, the Lavamatica will wash, dry, and fold one load of clothes. The price includes soap and water softener. That's a bargain. Most of the laundromats in the U.S. are strictly do-it-yourself. But here you can drop off your laundry in the morning, go out to the beach and play all day, then come and pick it up all folded and ready to wear when you go out to dinner or ready to use to change your bed.
If you're the type that wants to do your own, the Lavamatica can accommodate you too. It costs $1.00 each to wash and to dry a load of clothes.
The Lavamatica has been in its present position for years, but it has a recent addition, a beauty shop or Salon Estetica. This is owned by Gerardo's wife, Alba Miriam, and it lives up to its name, with bright and sparkling decor, white tiles, and plants for accent.
Gerardo is planning to build a car wash next door, so when that is complete, you can have your car, your clothes, and your hair all attended to at the same place, perhaps all at the same time. How much more efficient could anything be?
