Where Eagles Gather

by Margaret Fleming

We recently made the acquaintance of two fascinating people. The Legal Eagles, as they call themselves, are a pair of lawyers, Alejandro Marrufo and Rafael Gonzalez, who are helping us with some legal business. They are both outgoing and friendly, a pleasure to talk to and to do business with.

In addition to being attorneys, both Alejandro and Rafael are teachers at Cobach High School, a state school, of which there are 18 in Sonora. Alejandro teaches History of Sonora and of Mexico and Socioeconomic Structure of Mexico. We could learn a lot from him that would be interesting and relevant. Rafael teaches English and sometimes Tourism, which is a public relations class. This year he is too busy teaching English to do Tourism. He has 29 class hours a week. (As a former high school teacher, I can testify that that's A LOT!)

The school, founded 20 years ago, has a three-year progam and enrolls about 440 students from the ages of 14 to 17. They can choose careers in tourism, business administration, and computers. They have to pay tuition, but the cost of their books is included. Spouses and children of anyone who works at the school can attend free as long as they keep their grades high.

Rafael's wife Anabel is the principal secretary at the school, and their 14-year-old daughter Janenssy is a student in the 9th grade.

Alejandro is married and has 4 daughters and two grandchildren. He was formerly head of the Immigration Office (Delegado de Migraci¢n) and before that was a bank manager at Banpesca.

Rafael used to be the assistant Manager at the Vi¤a del Mar restaurant, Maria Bonita.

We enjoyed our chat with these neighbors and expect to be seeing a lot more of them. of two fascinating people.
