Puerto Peñasco has lots of small entrepreneurs. Many are to be found operating taco stands at street corners, and their products are as delicious as any served in fancy restaurants.
The other day we were ready for lunch and wondering where to go. Olegario, our sales manager, suggested a new taco stand that, he said, was different from what we were used to. He said he would take us there, and we discovered that it was diagonally across the street from Salmo's, near our El Futuro Print Shop.
The proprietor is Pilar Cham. Her name is Chinese, but she is only 1/4 Chinese. She came here 3 months ago from Cabo San Lucas, right on the southern tip of Baja California, with her 5-year-old daughter Miriam. She had worked in restaurants there but wanted to get away and start somewhere new. She likes Puerto Peñasco because it is a smaller place than Cabo San Lucas and the atmosphere is a little more leisurely.
Pilar's stand has seating inside and out and is furnished with clean new stainless steel equipment. She cooks and serves everything very efficiently. Her specialties are fish and shrimp tacos. We ordered some of each, and she immediately heated up her hot oil, dipped the seafood into batter and fried the pieces till crisp.
Then she folded them into tortillas and we added our own lime juice, salsa, shredded cabbage, and chopped onions. Delicious. Pilar also serves spicy beef, pork, and chicken tacos. We'll be back to visit her again.
