Poco a Poco (Step by Step)

Poco a Poco (Step by Step)

by John and Margaret Fleming

You may have noticed a new business called PH on a corner of Kino Blvd. and wondered what kind of store it is. If you'd ever visited Caborca, though, you wouldn't need to ask. PH (Pesqueria Hermanos) has two giant supermarkets there, where they sell everything from food to clothing to hardware to medicines, as well as housing a mall with soft drinks, fast foods, flowers, and much more. They are like Super K Marts in the US. PH has another large supermarket and a warehouse in Altar, Sonora.

The PH store in Puerto Peñasco has been open about a year. The company's development process is to test the market with small warehouse stores at first, then to enlarge them or build larger ones as the need develops. Two months ago the store opened its meat department; one month ago its pharmacy. The number of employees has grown from 11 to 18 in the past year. Step by step it's growing.

We recently met with the store manager, Carlos Tiznado, and the assistant manager, Alejo Jesús Fierro. Carlos is from Altar, Sonora, and Alejo is from Ciudad Obregon. They were very cordial and showed us all over the store.

The pharmacy is in front, at one side of the lobby, which is floored with white tile and is light, open and inviting. Behind this room is the warehouse, where customers can go back and pick out what they want. We saw everything there--cans of coffee, cleansers, fruit juice, tomato sauce, vegetables, condensed milk; bins of rice, and several kinds of beans; flat cartons of eggs; piles of bananas, carrots, and celery; jars of mayonnaise and syrup, boxes of cornflakes. Behind the first warehouse was another, with more items.

Carlos and Alejo told us that, in addition to selling to walk-in customers, they sell wholesale to other stores in Puerto Peñasco and Sonoyta. They are often able to save their customers as much as 40-50%.

By this time next year Carlos and Alejo hope to have two PH locations in Puerto Peñasco, the current warehouse store and a supermarket. In addition to groceries, the supermarket will have clothing, hardware, and shoes. Both local residents and visitors will be glad to have such a store available. This business is a welcome addition to the community.
